Buildings

The hotel’s five colourful buildings reflect our enthusiasm for literature and as well architecture and art in a special way: the Red House with our library, the Blue House with author’s rooms, the Green House with its avantgarde architecture, the Yellow House with literature from Hamburg and the Pink House with a permanent exhibition ‘Ink wash art’.

One feature they’ve all got in common: each building was individually designed with great passion.

The Red House

The Wedina’s concierge-like building, our heart.

Enjoy our legendary breakfast here in the morning, with artisanal regional produce, and selected teas specially matched with local water. You can sit either in the bright winter garden or if weather permits in the lush summer garden, our quiet oasis in the middle of the city.

In the main building our open library is growing. You’ll find more than 300 personally dedicated works of contemporary authors. Read and relax in the garden or take books up to bed for browsing at night in your uniquely decorated room. Recently renovated, no two rooms in the Red House look alike.

The Blue House

The travelling writers’ home.

Yoko Tawada, Joseph Conrad and Max Frisch have all engaged with travel, departure and arrival in their works, and with gathering experiences and impressions. Thanks to those writers our Blue House has fourteen authors’ rooms to inspire travellers and globetrotters.

You’ll live in light and open spaces – urban with lots of concrete and modern, clean lines. From the entrance this building makes a statement about itself: it talks about its visitors and makes geometrical forms dance. This building has completely embraced literature – every room is its own library.

The Green House

Home to open architecture.

Boxes piled on top of each other, some of which emerge like cubic bowfronts from the facade. Raw concrete, glass, timber and green granite. Specially crafted furniture. Peaceful and quiet rooms, concentration and space, always in sight of the alpine Zen garden’s green.

In the avantgarde Green House you live and sleep facing the garden, in each of the eleven rooms. Enjoy a glass of wine with tapas in the evening, on our terrace or your balcony. Surrounded by light-filled architecture.

The Yellow House

Home to Hamburg’s literature.

Live clear and free, in simple spaces with a tidy nordic attitude. Our Yellow House embraces Hamburg’s literature and presents a selection of it on every wall.

Like the city, it has many faces and caters to almost every taste with ten different genres, including Low German, thriller and children’s books. Selected by Stephan Samtleben, for reading addicts. Light-filled spaces and silence will enhance your experience. Just read!

The Pink House

Authentic, lovable and a little quirky.

A neo-classical timber frame house (“Fachwerkhaus”) with a past. It’s always been a Hamburg icon, infused with the liberal-mindedness of the quarter. Its history is rich with stories. Every room has its own well-travelled tale to tell.

You can choose between four rooms, each lovingly furnished with collector’s items and with French names. From the large studio ’chambre famille’ with its green rooftop terrace, to the mirror-filled ’French fifties’ with views onto the colourful streetlife. And on the walls? Ink wash paintings from the 60s, telling of turbulent times full of hope.

The Second Home

Boarding in the Wedina.

Change of scenery, work, a new love – whatever passion brings you to Hamburg, in the Green or Yellow House you’re welcome to stay. Until another place calls you.

Our studios can be occupied for longer terms. We’d love to tell you more about it, so let’s talk.
